Golf Day raises £30,000 for Gifts in Kind
On Wednesday 16th July, WJR hosted an event at Hartsbourne Country Club for golfers to showcase their skills and learn more about the unique humanitarian aid operation Gifts in Kind (GiK).
108 people took part, raising a remarkable £30,000 for GiK, funds which will make it possible for two huge 40ft containers full of new and nearly new goods to depart from WJR’s warehouse in Neasden for Moldova and Belarus in the coming weeks. Items such as warm clothes, quality shoes, essential toiletries and Judaica will arrive at the WJR supported community centres and be distributed diligently, according to need. The trailers will help to provide nearly 100,000 deprived and vulnerable people with a new piece of clothing or a toy for their child.
The event was organised by Melvyn Novak, Chair of WJR’s GiK Committee and a dedicated supporter. Paul Anticoni, Chief Executive of WJR, addressed the guests to highlight the cause that the proceeds from the event are supporting. Paul commented:
“It is actually WJR’s 75th Birthday this very year. Of course the challenges facing our community today are thankfully less catastrophic than they were in 1933, yet the task facing this remarkable organisation remains immense.
“There are still tens of thousands of desperate Jewish families living in conditions reminiscent of the 19th century who are depending on us to help them through winter. We have the choice to give – they may not have the choice to survive.”
