Zaparozhye, an important industrial city for Ukraine, has a population of around 20,000 Jews out of a total population of 790,000. It is the location of the first WJR ‘Our Town Project’, begun in 2001 when a building was purchased for the community. Today, this building houses the community centre, the hesed and all the children’s programming, including services for those with learning and physical disabilities.
The JCC was formally opened in 2004 and since then has been recognised by the Regional State Administration as ‘a model of community development’. The centre maintains strong links not only with those in the Jewish community but also other ethnic minority communities in Zaparozhye and works hard to improve life for all within the city.
Today, WJR funds programming that provides an holistic welfare package for the elderly, children and those living with disabilities within the community.
In 2002, WJR also bought the Jewish school’s building, renovated it and created a home on site for Jewish orphans and vulnerable children so that they might take advantage of the Jewish school from a position of safety and support. Today, 30 children between the ages of 4-17 live in the home and attend the adjacent school with other Jewish children from the city.
